Visiting Devils Postpile in Mammoth Lakes was our main objective when we left our Bed and Breakfast early that morning. After a few long and strenuous hikes the days before, my knee wasn't in the best shape. Therefore, we weren't sure if we really wanted to make that 6-mile hike to Rainbow Falls. I'm so glad that we did. It was worth all the excruciating pain on the way back. Rainbow Falls is a breathtaking and impressive 101ft waterfall. It is known for the way its mist creates colorful rainbows. And the best thing about this waterfall is that not only you can see the waterfall from the top, you can also hike down to the bottom of it too. The roundtrip distance to the waterfall is 5.4 miles and the hike is generally considered moderate in difficulty. However due to the length, elevation gain, and rocky terrain in sections of the trail, some visitors may rate the hike as difficult. It takes about 3-5 hours to hike to the waterfall and back. Rainbow Falls and nearby Lower Falls are located in Devils Postpile National Monument in Mammoth Lakes, California. If you are visiting Rainbow Falls and Devils Postpile in the summer, you'll have to catch the Red Meadows Shuttle. Also, don't skip out on Lower Falls. The trek to the waterfall takes about 1 hour to reach if we dont stop to rest alot . Rainbow Waterfalls got its name because one will see small rainbow near the waterfall due to sun rays. Pool Day. Groveland, California - the gateway to Yosemite Valley. With the valley limiting visitors due to the pandemic, we ventured out to find some other local hot spots to explore on our out door adventure. I say hot spot because we were camping in over 100 degree heat. We NEEDED to cool down. It looked like a water day for sure. Lake Don Pedro looked interesting, but with the water so low, there wouldn't be much shade and easy swimming. Pine Mountain Lake is private, so that was out of the question. Rainbow Pool was close by so we decided to check out this swimming hole. We saw a few families we met at our campground - Yosemite Pines RV Park. We met some very courageous locals as well. Parking is limited, facilities are meager, but there is a latrine. Pack your trash, and PLEASE DON'T BRING GLASS!!!! Everyone goes barefoot, so be safe! If you bring it in, bring it out!!! Here you get to hike along the middle fork of the San Joaquin river see two of the best attractions in Mammoth Lakes. To reach the trailhead you need to jump on the 395 and drive through the town of Mammoth Lakes. If you’re listening to this in the future and public transportation is a thing again you’ll catch a shuttle at the Mammoth Mountain Adventure Center and take it down to the trailhead. During COVID times and during the offseason they let us drive right to the trailhead. You drive right past Minaret Vista, a stop you should definitely hit closer to sunrise or sunset. Then almost immediately you enter the Devil's Postpile National Monument. You head down the windy postpile road until you reach the valley. From here you’re looking for the Ranger Station or stop 6 on the shuttle map. This is where the trailhead starts. There are two parking lots here the first one is for backpackers and the second is larger for day hikers. Remember this is bear country so there are a few bear bins close to the Ranger Station. Also if you have kids and they are interested in becoming a Jr ranger head over for a booklet and you can earn some cool swag. The rangers here were super helpful and answered a lot of questions. But more on that later. Jumping on the trail you head south along the San Joaquin River to Devils Postpile. This .4 mile stretch of trail is extremely well-trafficked and very flat. It quickly leads you to this amazing natural wonder. The honeycomb pattern of Devils Postpile is one of nature's strongest designs and just amazing to see up close and personal. How does this even happen? right? Molten lava and glacial ice shaped these unusual rock columns. Basaltic lava more than 400 feet deep filled this narrow valley nearly 100,000 years ago. As the lava cooled, cracks formed on the surface to release built-up tension these cracks formed into hexagons which is one of nature's most efficient and stable shapes. During the last ice age about 20,000 years ago, a glacier-carved, shined and exposed this cliff for us all to enjoy. I highly recommend hiking to the top of this natural wonder but it is the most elevation gain of the entire hike. From here you can really see the glacier shined hexagonal tiles of Devils Postpile. Hiking down from here you can see how massive the lava pool was as you head down the trail to Rainbow Falls you can see a bunch of areas with more postpiles. This is something truly unique and something that I’ve just never seen before. If you don’t go to the top you still have a decent hill to climb just past the main postpiles. From here the trail to Rainbow Falls is another 2.4 miles along the middle fork of the San Joaquin River. The water of the San Joaquin travels from here all the way to San Francisco Bay. So be sure to practice and leave no trace principles by packing out trash and leaving rocks and other things you find where they are. You cross a few streams along the way with some well-maintained crossings. You enter a burn area from the 1992 rainbow fire. This was filmed in 2020 so you can really get a feel for how long it takes for forests like this to grow back. The fire was started from a lightning strike and From here you can also get a great look at Mammoth Mountain if you haven’t seen my list of best things to do in Mammoth check out that video in the link above or in the description. As you approach Rainbow Falls you can hear it before you see it. As you crest a small hill you can see the top of the falls. DO NOT swim upstream of the falls. About 400” annually. The Ski resort was founded in 1953 and has been providing endless entertainment for skiers, boarders, snowmobiles, and sightseers since. 2) Rainbow Falls Rainbow Falls is the highest waterfall on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River plunging 102 ft and eventually snaking all the way to San Francisco Bay. The falls are named for the rainbows that appear in their mist on sunny summer days. 3) Devils Postpile Molten lava and glacial ice shaped these unusual rock columns. Basaltic lava more than 400 feet deep filled this narrow valley nearly 100,000 years ago. As the lava cooled, cracks formed on the surface to release built-up tension these cracks formed into hexagons which is one of nature's most efficient and stable shapes. 4) Lake Mary The largest lake in the Mammoth Lakes Basin is nearly a mile long. This is a popular lake for fishing, boating and sailing is a great place to spend a hot summer day. Lake Mary Marina has boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and fishing gear rentals. 5) Backpacking/Hiking My favorite summer activity in mammoth is backpacking with tons of epic trails and alpine lakes that you find a little solitude during sunset. A few of my favorite trails in the area are Duck Pass Trail, Thousand Island Lake, and Mammoth Crest. 6) Biking Mammoth has loads of bike trails and paths and is extremely bike-friendly. Mammoth mt turns into a mountain biking mecca during the summer months. You can buy a lift ticket for your bike and boom down the mountain. 7) Fishing Mammoth Lakes basin boasts 5 main lakes most of them stocked with trout! Twin Lakes is the first lake you arrive at and has the best campground in the mammoth lakes area. 8) Convict Lake Convict lake is one of the most dramatic lakes that I’ve ever visited. Sevehah Cliff, composed of folded metamorphic rock, provides a colorful almost painted backdrop to Convict Lake. 9) Wild Willy's Hot Spring This is by far one of the coolest things to do in the mammoth area. It’s down far down a rocky road and feels like the middle of nowhere but that’s half the point. 10) June Lake June Lake is another picturesque lake in the area and one that probably deserves its own video. It boasts fantastic campgrounds, fishing, boating, and my favorite sunning on the beachy shores of the lake. 11) Hot Creek Geological Site Hot Creek is like a tiny "Yellowstone" in the Mono Lakes region. There are beautiful blue hot pools and steaming water here. There is plenty of parking at the top of the canyon and a quick walk down to the creek is well worth the effort. 12) Mono Lake Mono Lake is a salt lake that is close to the town of Lee Vining. The lack of an outlet for this lake makes this lake alkaline and helps to provide a perfect and productive habitat for brine shrimp. Twin Falls drains Lake Mamie as it tumbles into the Twin Lakes. 15) Earthquake Fault The ripped-apart rock of the Mammoth Lakes Earthquake Fault shows off the tectonic powers of this ever-changing landscape. 16) Mammoth brewery No trip to mammoth is complete without a trip to Mammoth Brewery.
