Eppure nella storia recente, solo pochi decenni fa, la Germania fu definita dal The Economist "il malato d'Europa". La Germania era considerata Paese europeo con più problemi strutturali. Tanto che a fine anni '90 si prevedeva sarebbe entrato in una lunga fase di crisi. Ciò soprattutto a causa dei problemi dovuti al riassetto istituzionale dopo la riunificazione di Germania Est e Germania Ovest. Il Paese, dopo la riunificazione, si trovò con un alto livello di disoccupazione. Tuttavia, le politiche del governo per contrastarlo portarono, per l’aumento della spesa pubblica, ad alzare le tasse, soprattutto quelle sul lavoro. Così, rendendo più costoso assumere, la disoccupazione continuava a salire, avviando il rischio di una crisi dei consumi. Un crollo della domanda nel mercato interno. Inoltre, con la concorrenza di nuove potenze industriali, come la Cina al tempo emergente, visto il peggioramento della competitività tedesca dato dal mercato del lavoro, anche sul lato delle esportazioni si prevedeva una crisi. Il che, dal punto di vista meramente economico, sarebbe stato ancora più grave, visto che l’export rappresenta circa la metà del PIL annuo tedesco. Eppure, smentiranno le previsioni, grazie alle radicali riforme dell’Agenda 2010 avviata dal secondo governo guidato da Gerhard Schröder, del partito SPD. Le riforme erano molto dure, riducendo garanzie e diritti per i lavoratori. Come prevedibile non piacquero all’elettorato socialista dell’SPD, facendo perdere al partito le elezioni del 2005, a vantaggio del CDU di Angela Merkel, che manterrà la maggioranza per oltre 20 anni. Quando gli effetti delle riforme arrivarono disoccupazione e competitività migliorarono in modo evidente. Soprattutto, continuarono a farlo anche con la crisi del 2008. E nonostante il forte calo del PIL tedesco nel 2009, la situazione restò del tutto stabile e l’economia tornò subito a crescere. A differenza che in altri Paesi europei. Ma ciò in buona parte proprio perché gli strumenti dell’Agenda 2010 dovevano servire proprio per affrontare un periodo di crisi. Quindi anche dopo il 2008, a differenza di altri Paesi, erano preparati. Consolidando così la Germania come la maggiore economia europea. In this history documentary we explore the Germanic Wars and consider why didn't Rome Conquer Germania? This was certainly not out of a lack of trying as can be see with our Avenging Varus series which covers the many campaigns of Germanicus fought throughout the region. These saw many -clashes with the Germanic Army of Arminius such as the Battle of Idistavisus and the Battle of the Angrivarian Wall. Yet this was but one small chapter of the greater context that was the history of the Germanic Wars. We therefore begin our documentary with a recap of this conflict. The Germanic Wars began in the 2nd century BC with the migration of several tribes which resulted in the Cimbrian War. These were ultimately beaten back by Marius and a reformed Roman Army but the conflict had seen the tribes take the offense. This would begin to change in the Gallic War when Julius Caesar first fought the Suebi west of the Rhine before pursuing them across the great river into their homeland. From then on the conflicts would largely be fought along this border as Rome sought to establish a zone of control along the new frontier of the province of Gaul. Nearly 40 years of war would be fought in Germania with a rapidly increasing body count until Tiberius finally called an end to the madness. The next part of the history documentary seeks to answer why didn't Rome Conquer Germania? It does so by looking at a variety of larger trends and circumstantial factors at play. This involves discussions of manpower, resources, imperial politics, Germanic strength, poor geography, and a host of other contributing factors. But why do you think Rome failed to conquer Germania? And what if Rome had conquered Germania? Germania: Hitler's Dream Capital and Albert Speer’s plan to transform Berlin into the capital of a 1,000-year Reich In the years leading up to World War II, Adolf Hitler didn't just see Berlin as the capital of Germany — he envisioned it as the capital of the world. But according to historian Roger Moorhouse, Berlin was poorly organized and hardly the menacing giant the Nazi leader thought it should be. So, in 1937, plans surfaced for "Welthauptstadt Germania," or World Capital Germania, an awe-inspiring metropolis inspired by ancient Roman architecture. Rooted in a spirit of intimidation, the designs were about as grandiose as urban planning gets. The centerpiece of the mega-city was the Volkshalle, or People's Hall, a colossal domed building that would have been the largest indoor structure in the world if completed. Germania audiobook 🤍 Publius Cornelius TACITUS (56 - 117), translated by Alfred John CHURCH (1829 - 1912) and William Jackson BRODRIBB (1829 - 1905) The Germania (Latin: De Origine et situ Germanorum, literally The Origin and Situation of the Germans), written by Gaius Cornelius Tacitus around 98, is an ethnographic work on the Germanic tribes outside the Roman Empire. Germania fits squarely within the tradition established by authors from Herodotus to Julius Caesar. Tacitus himself had already written a similar essay on the lands and tribes of Britannia in his Agricola. The Germania begins with a description of the lands, laws, and customs of the Germanic people; it then segues into descriptions of individual tribes, beginning with those dwelling closest to Roman lands and ending on the uttermost shores of the Baltic, among the amber-gathering Aesti, the primitive and savage Fenni, and the unknown tribes beyond them. Tacitus' descriptions of the Germanic character are at times favorable in contrast to the opinions of the Romans of his day. He holds the strict monogamy and chastity of Germanic marriage customs worthy of the highest praise, in contrast to what he saw as the vice and immorality rampant in Roman society of his day, and he admires their open hospitality, their simplicity, and their bravery in battle. One should not, however, think that Tacitus' portrayal of Germanic customs is entirely favorable; he notes a tendency in the Germanic people for what he saw as their habitual drunkenness, laziness, and barbarism, among other traits. Tacitus says that physically, the Germans appeared to be a distinct race, not an admixture of their neighbors. In Chapter 4, he mentions that they have common characteristics of blue eyes, blond or reddish hair and large size. In Chapter 7, Tacitus describes their government and leadership as somewhat merit-based and egalitarian, with leadership by example rather than authority and that punishments are carried out by the priests. He mentions that the opinions of women are given respect. In Chapter 9, Tacitus describes a form of folk assembly rather similar to the public Things recorded in later Germanic sources: in these public deliberations, the final decision rests with the men of the tribe as a whole. Tacitus further discusses the role of women in Chapters 7 and 8, mentioning that they often accompany the men to battle and offer encouragement. He says that the men are often motivated to fight for the women because of an extreme fear of their being taken captive. Tacitus says that the Germans are mainly content with one wife, except for a few political marriages, and specifically and explicitly compares this practice favorably to other barbarian cultures, perhaps since monogamy was a shared value between Roman and Germanic cultures. He also records that adultery is very rare, and that an adulterous woman is shunned afterward by the community regardless of her beauty. Welthauptstadt Germania ("World Capital Germania") was the projected renewal of the German capital Berlin during the Nazi period, part of Adolf Hitler's vision for the future of Germany after the planned victory in World War II. Albert Speer, the "first architect of the Third Reich", produced many of the plans for the rebuilt city in his capacity as overseer of the project, only a small portion of which was realized between the years 1937-1943 when construction took place. Some projects, such as the creation of a great East-West city axis, which included broadening Charlottenburger Chaussee (today Straße des 17. Juni) and placing the Berlin victory column in the center, far away from the Reichstag, where it originally stood, succeeded. Others, however, such as the creation of the Große Halle (Great Hall), had to be shelved owing to the beginning of war. A great number of the old buildings in many of the planned construction areas were however demolished before the war and eventually defeat stopped the plans. The ending is a little bit fucked up.
