UPDATE: Check out our new v2.0 intro to CAN bus! 🤍 _ What is CAN bus? 🤍 In this intro we explain the basics of CAN, incl. advantages, history, messages and the relation to protocols like J1939, OBD2 and CANopen! For a quick intro to our CANedge CAN bus data loggers, check out the below! 🤍 In short, the Controller Area Network (CAN) is a standard used to allow Electronic Control Units (ECUs) to communicate in an efficient manner without a central computer. Messages are broadcast in a system that requires very little physical wiring making CAN bus low cost, robust and efficient. Applications of the CAN protocol include in particular automotive (cars, trucks, buses, commercial vehicles etc.), but also e.g. boats, drones and industrial automation. In our increasingly computerized world, we need robust, and relible communications between the hundreds of electronics in situations like airplanes, trains, cars, hospitals, & industrial robots. This communication is critical and failure of this communication can be fatal to human lives. The CAN bus communication protocol is responsible for this reliable communication. Just like I2C and SPI are communication protocols, the CAN bus also carries information between electronics. However, the CAN bus works on a P2P (Peer to Peer) network In this video we will learn about how CAN buses work, the different types of CAN bus layers, and how the CAN bus messages work. 3 Arduino Nano are connected to the Controllino MAXI PLC using CAN Bus protocol #MCP2515 module. For demo purpose, each Arduino will send a random number to the PLC to simulate a value from sensor. The PLC is connected via USB to a PC running a Windows app (diagnostic tool) to display the status of each node. When a node is disconnected or malfunction, it will display as Offline. Any faulty device can then be removed and replaced without affecting other devices.

Controller Area Network (CAN) Controller MCP2515 Module demo CAN BUS communication diagnostic tool. It uses 4 Arduino Nano as CAN transceiver and 1 Controllino Maxi PLC (Arduino compatible) as CAN receiver. The 4 nodes send random numbers to simulate sensor data, and the PLC receive the CAN messages, check CAN ID and send to a HMI (Human Machine Interface) display. The display is a 7 inch Touch Screen running a Windows Winforms app to display the data and for visualization. To simulate a fault device, the power is switched off, the display will update the status accordingly. 5 MCP25515 module are connected to micro-controllers using SPI interface, and a jumper can be attached which will give 120ohm termination. CAN High & CAN Low are the two terminal screws to attach CAN wires over a distance for communicating with other CAN Module. The PC running the Windows diagnostic tool connects to the Serial Port of the PLC which is the CAN receiver to read messages from the 4 nodes / devices. Register and get $100 from NextPCB: 🤍 PCB Assembly capabilities info: 🤍 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: In this tutorial, we will learn about the CAN Bus protocol by Interfacing MCP2515 CAN Bus Module with Arduino. We will transmit the DHT11 Sensor data over a certain distance using the CAN protocol. Controller Area Network also known as CAN-BUS is a common industrial bus because of its long travel distance, medium communication speed, and high reliability. It is commonly found on modern machine tools and as an automotive diagnostic bus. In modern Vehicle systems, there are more than 60 to 100 sensor units for sensing and exchanging information. Similarly, car manufacturers are constantly making their cars smarter by adding features like Autonomous driving, Airbag system, ABS (Anti-braking System), Telematics, Transmission Control, Battery management systems, and Cruise control system, etc. To enable the transmission and receiving of the data at a very high-speed standard automotive communication protocols are required. The standard communication protocols like UART, SPI, and I2C are not reliable for this system. Hence we need an automobile communication protocol like the CAN protocol for high-speed & 1000s of data transmission at a single time. In this guide we will learn about the CAN Bus Communication protocol using Microchip MCP2515 CAN Bus Module & Arduino Board. Using the pair of CAN Bus Module MCP2515, we will send the DHT11 Sensor data over a distance of a few centimeters. Typically the communication speed for CAN ranges from 50 Kbps to 1Mbps and the distance can range from 40 meters at 1Mbps to 1000 meters at 50kpbs. A modern 3D printer has many, many wires going from the mainboard to the print head. Each set is responsible for a component and its operation. But what if we reduced that loom to just four wires? Two power wires, and two communication wires. Today we are testing such a CAN BUS system with the Bigtreetech U2C and EBB modules. This is currently only compatible with Klipper and requires a bit of work to setup. Tracking down the source of U codes can be challenging, but this quick check of the condition of the CAN Bus can be a helpful part of your diagnostics. It may even help you discover the problem right away. Be sure to check the service or repair manual for the vehicle you are working on to be sure of the resistor values on the CAN BUS as it may differ from the example in this video. The video also has "Fun With Resistors" in the title (I couldn't "resist" that) because it may be helpful in understanding how resistors behave in both series and parallel circuits. Learn how a Controller Area Network Bus (CAN Bus) operates as well as its applications in different industries. This video covers how a CAN Bus connects nodes and ECUs in a single system and the specific protocols that define different CAN operations. It also highlights how traditional CAN differs from CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD). You can use MATLAB®, Simulink®, and Vehicle Network Toolbox™ to directly interface with your CAN Bus and develop applications that: - Support hardware manufacturers such as Kvaser, NI®, PEAK-System, and Vector - Collect raw CAN data, process the data using DBC files, and visualize the results in a single environment - Utilize the CAN Tool to work directly with your CAN Bus in an application without having to write MATLAB code - Implement higher-level protocols such as XCP and J1939 to define CAN operations for specific applications - Convert into C or C code and deploy to embedded targets Vehicle Network Toolbox: 🤍 Get a free product trial: 🤍 Learn more about MATLAB: 🤍 Learn more about Simulink: 🤍 See what's new in MATLAB and Simulink: 🤍 © 2022 The MathWorks, Inc. I just wanted to share a quick tip for anyone dealing with a CAN BUS problem. In the video I will explain how I used this technique to solve a problem on a 2012 Chrysler 300. Problems like this in the CAN BUS system will cause communication problems between different modules and may set communication DTC codes like U1000 or U0100 and many others. If you have already eliminated a short to ground and a short to power on the Controller Area Network system, then try using a labscope to lok at the waveform pattern. Thank you for watching!
