In terms of advantages, these packages are all separate, which means that each package contains either an application or a library: you only install what is needed, nothing more. This also means they tend to use less space as time goes on. Second, they're maintained and tested by your distributions, which means they should all work well without any issues. Third, they're all based on a dependency system: applications declare which other packages they need to run. You install a package as a superuser, which means you grant the package all the rights to do whatever it wants to your system as it's being installed. They also can create dependency hell. These packages need to be made for every architecture, and for 32 bit and 64 bit, for all the currently supported versions of a distribution, and for all distributions. And that was the main reason why Flatpaks were invented. It packages the application and everything it needs to run in a single bundle. If the application depends on a LOT of libraries that are commonly used by other applications, it can install what's called a runtime instead. Flatpaks are only meant for graphical applications: they aren't a way to distribute libraries, or command line apps. Flatpaks are generally hosted on Flathub, but there are others repos. Flatpaks are more secure than regular packages. They're installed as a regular user, and can't install crap that will run at the system level. They can also use a sandbox, with permissions. Another advantage is for app developers: flatpaks run on any distribution that has flatpak installed, which is basically all of them apart from Ubuntu and its various flavors. It also means you're not dependent on your distribution for updates: you can get the new versions of your app as soon as the developer has published them. Last advantage is no dependency hell. Flatpaks tend to use more space, and they can''t fully replace packages: they are only for graphical programs. Finally, flatpak apps might not follow your custom themes. You can install Snap packages on Ubuntu and all of its derivatives, or any distro that can install the snapd package. They're auto updated and containerized. Snaps also let you test future releases in advance, with "channels". While the packaging format is open source, the server component isn't. Snaps are very slow to open at first start. They tend to clutter your mount points. Snaps also generally don't support your custom themes. Snaps do have the advantage of supporting command line utilities. AppImages are an all in one bundle that packages the application and all its libraries in a single file. They're very portable. They also won't create dependency hell, since they're completely independent. Appimages can be sandboxed but not a lot of them are. Appimages don't integrate with your system at all. They also use more space than any other packaging format. Next is the AUR, it means Arch User Repository. it's available on Arch Linux and other Arch based distros like Manjaro. The AUR is a big repository of applications and libraries packaged by individuals: they're generally not official, and not supported by the distro or the original developer. Its main advantage is that is has virtually everything. The AUR doesn't host packages, but packagebuilds, which are scripts that will make the package. This means that installing something might take a bit longer, and it also means that unless you read the package build scripts yourself, you completely trust an individual with the security of your system.

Manjaro has let their certificates expire 4 times now. It might seem like a very small issue, but it's extremely basic. Renewing certificates is extremely easy, and can be automated. Manjaro's inability to anticipate this or automate it isn't a good sign in terms of how seriously they take their security. Manjaro also has the habit of trying to release things that aren't ready, without checking with the upstream devs first. One example is with the Asahi Linux project, where Manjaro decided that having Apple Silicon support early would be cool, and shipped a broken kernel. 🤍 🤍 This is what led to the "don't ship it" manifesto from various developers, and probably what led the Bottles developer to also ask distros to not repackage their software without talking to them first. 🤍 🤍 Another problem that arose was the use of the AUR in Manjaro. Except the AUR doesn't really work well on Manjaro. Because the AUR assumes you're using the latest Arch software, with the latest versions Arch releases. Which Manjaro doesn't, because they hold back packages for testing. Which means that installing stuff from the AUR can seriously break your Manjaro system if you're not careful. Manjaro's AUR helper had a bug in it, that sent thousands of requests to the AUR's servers for each Manjaro user. This resulted in an involuntary DDOS attack, short for distributed denial of service 🤍 🤍 And then there are a few other issues. The project lead wanted to buy a new laptop using Manjaro funds, for about 2000€. The treasurer refused the expense, because it went against Manjaro's policy. This led to an argument with the project lead, and surfaced other expenses that hadn't been discussed according to Manjaro's Policy, and led the treasurer to leave the company, leaving the project lead in full control of all the community funds. 🤍 Then Manjaro announced that they would be shipping SoftMaker office by default instead of LibreOffice. Replacing an open source component with a proprietary one isn't really something you'd expect from a Linux distribution. 🤍 Manjaro has also often been accused of not contributing to upstream, especially on the mobile front. Someone involved in the Pine64 community points out that the fact that most mobile Pine64 projects are starting to falter is due to the fact that only Manjaro is a supported distribution for the Pinephone, where before there were a myriad of community editions, and that Manjaro doesn't really contribute to supporting the hardware. 🤍

Manjaro 18.1.0, a future controversial release? (Flatpak, Snap, FreeOffice, AppArmor)

Follow-up here: 🤍 This is a demo of the RC6 of Manjaro XFCE 18.1.0, codenamed Juhraya. It comes with few, but pretty significant changes, some of them being pretty controversial in the community. - Flatpak and Snap is enabled and ready to be used by default; - LibreOffice got replaced entirely in the default installation by FreeOffice, a closed-source, proprietary office suite made by SoftMaker considered by many as being crippleware. (LibreOffice is still available in the official repositories); - AppArmor is installed by default (most likely it should be enabled by default, but it isn't in the RC6, most likely something that is unintended and will eventually be fixed once it get noticed). (Changes compared to Manjaro XFCE 18.0.4) Manjaro XFCE 18.1.0 has not been released yet officially, we only have release candidates for now. - Download RC6: 🤍 Miscellaneous links (to get an idea of how it has been controversial): 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 Music: 🤍

Instead of just telling people "not to distro hop" and to figure it out for themselves, sometimes it's better just to tell them what to do. Just use Manjaro XFCE (🤍). When I install Linux on a normie's computer, I've always chosen Manjaro for them and that always works best. It's an easy to use distro, which has most all of the advantages of Arch Linux, including AUR access, rolling release for muh gaymes for gamers and if you git gud you can also play around with desktop environments and window managers easily. All of these have the benefit of being independent from your Linux distribution, meaning that no matter what version or distribution of Linux we're running, you can run all of these packaging formats. And this differs from something like APT, pacman, DNF, whatever it may be, because those are distributions specific package management systems. Just a few hours ago, Manjaro released a new version (21.3). Manjaro has three main editions: (1) Xfce, (2) KDE Plasma, and (3) GNOME. I almost always look at the Xfce and Plasma editions of Manjaro, so I thought I would switch things up and look at their latest GNOME edition... It single-handedly turned the Linux desktop from something that was only usable by really knowledgeable people, into something that was really accessible to the masses, even then. Then in short succession, they dropped Unity, version 7 for the desktop, and version 8 which was meant to be the successor, that brought convergence between device type, they dropped Mir, their display server that was meant to replace X.org and be an alternative to Wayland, and they basically settled for GNOME 3. Ubuntu has a desktop problem. Since it basically abandoned the leadership of the desktop to the community, it also doesn't seem to anticipate things very much. Which means that the extensions they apply to GNOME pull them backwards. Waiting 6 months to get what everyone else has sucks, and you get a Frankenbuntu mishmash of versions of apps and libraries, that can't really be as stable as having the whole lot on the same version number. Ubuntu also has fixed repo versions for apps, desktop environments, and libraries. Only security fixes come through, apart from a few apps, like web browsers. This means that this frankenbuntu is locked in place. If you use 22.04 LTS, you're never getting the full GNOME 42 in your repos. Ubuntu also has an apps problem. Ubuntu pushes Snaps, their own containerized solution. On the desktop, Snaps have issues. These issues were shared in the past by other similar formats, like Flatpak, or Appimages. But nowadays, it's really, really late to the party. It doesn't support dark mode integration. It doesn't integrate with themes. it doesn't offer a way to solve these issues, contrary to Flatpak and the Flatseal app for example. Because it uses fixed repos, without feature updates, it needs a way to bring application updates to the desktop, and this way, is supposedly Snaps. The issue is, the snap store doesn't seem to have as many desktop apps as Flathub has, and snap as a solution is getting increasingly outdated, slow to launch, and less well integrated than Flatpak. It's also being aggressively pushed to Ubuntu users, and this impacts downstream distros, for example, Canonical decided to only ship Chromium as a Snap, which meant that other distros, like Linux Mint, had to take on the burden of packaging and maintaining it themselves if they didn't want to adopt the snap version. Ubuntu is still very easy to use. But its crown in terms of "the easiest distro for beginners" is long gone. Nowadays, plenty of options are better than Ubuntu for complete Linux beginners. Linux Mint has a relentless drive to keep working on what made Ubuntu great in the first place: everything must have a GUI to configure it. Zorin OS does as well, even though its GNOME implementation is also a frankenbuntu, or frankenzorin or whatever. These 2 options alone are, in my opinion, much better for beginners than Ubuntu. They have more quality of life features, like built in accent colors, more configuration tools, and they support more software, plus all the software made for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu's Decline

When Ubuntu came on the scene in 2004, it made desktop Linux viable to many with its ease of use and friendly layout. Instead of constantly improving this and becoming the “King of All Distributions” it took a very different path. While I still use Ubuntu server with some caveats, I will NOT use Ubuntu Desktop. website article: 🤍 Support My Work - ►► Get Updates, Launch Announcements and More ➜ 🤍 ►► Chris Titus Tech Digital Downloads ➜ 🤍 ►► Product and Service Recommendations ➜ 🤍 ►► My YouTube Gear and Computers ➜ 🤍 Other Places to Find Me - ►► Titus Tech Talk ➜ 🤍 ►► Titus Tech Gaming ➜ 🤍 ►► Chris Titus Fitness ➜ 🤍 ►► Twitch ➜ 🤍 ►► Twitter ➜ 🤍 DISCLAIMER: This video and description contain affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a small commission.
