One of the world’s greatest driving road ! Furka Pass is the legendary Swiss mountain pass that gained fame after it was featured in a car chase scene in the James Bond movie “Goldfinger” from 1964. An Aston Martin DB5 and a Ford Mustang climbed this scenic driving road, located in the Uri/Valais region of Switzerland. More than 50 years later the landscapes have remained almost the same, and this is most certainly a road in the Alps that those in search for the best driving roads in Europe should experience. It is many people’s favourite road, and it might become yours too. Driving Furka Pass Furka Pass is situated close to other scenic roads. If you are approaching it from north you might drive over Grimsel Pass before arriving to the bottom of Furka, and if you approaching it from south it is possible you will find yourself on top of Nufenen Pass before reaching Furka Pass. In our personal opinion you will experience the most exciting climb if you are driving it from west to east, since this is where the tightest hairpins are located. Once you have reached the bend where the now closed Hotel Belvedere still stands we advice you to stop to enjoy the scenery, take a walk inside the Rhone Glacier Ice Grotto, or just grab a coffee with a view. Furka Pass looks incredible from all angles – whether you are looking up from the valley, ready to start your engine and tackle the hairpins up to Belvedere, or have reached it already and look down at the valley and Rhone River. The road that continues from Belvedere and Realp is also very scenic, with nice straights and of course even more hairpin corners. The altitude of this mountain pass is 2,429 metres above sea level, which makes it the fourth highest paved mountain pass in Switzerland. Because this region of Switzerland gets a lot of snow in the winter the season for the road is not very long. It opens every year in June and usually closes again in October. In the winter when the road is closed you can transport your car by train in the Furka Base Tunnel, connecting Realp and Oberwald. Although the Furka car train operates 365 days a year we really advice you to forget about this option in the summer, if you like us enjoy driving and spectacular views. info source : 🤍 music from : 🤍 ( if you follow this link you get one month free ) If you are a youtuber you need Tubebuddy ! In this video we'll be looking at the wonderful Furka mountain pass rack railway. We've been here once before. This time you have the chance to view it in the opposite direction. Here's the first video in case you missed it: 🤍 The line used to be the heart of the Furka Oberalp railway (FO), a narrow gauge rack railway connecting the SBB station of Brig in the canton of Wallis with the RhB network in Disentis/Mustér (together hosting the glacier express), with a branch line connecting to Göschenen of the Gotthard railway. Construction of the line commenced in 1911. As a result of World War I, funds and workers were no longer available, putting a stop to progress. In 1926, the remainder of the line was finally finished. Due to large amounts of snow and the danger of avalanches, the line had to be closed during winter months. This included removing catenary wires and other pieces of infrastructure prone to damage, closing the tunnels and even folding a specially designed bridge down into the valley. The viaduct which once stood in its place was destroyed by an avalanche in 1916 before a train even got to drive on it. The high costs involved with this procedure, as well as the inconvenience of the line being divided for 5 to 6 months of the year led to the development of the Furka base tunnel. This was completed in 1982, upon which the mountain pass was decommissioned and planned to be removed. Thankfully, railway fans formed an association, aiming to preserve the line, which they were successful in doing. Finally by 2010, the line had been restored to the extent that trains could once again travel all the way from Realp to Oberwald. Special thanks the the DFB for allowing us to film and share this special experience of a former electric line with diesel and steam traction. In Gletsch we cross 2 steam trains. Apparently departures are only possible from track 1, which meant shunting to track 1 after the first steam train had left and then waiting for the second on to arrive. I hope you enjoyed the video. featured in James Bond Chase's scenes in 007 "Goldfinger' the Furka and Grimsel Passes, are gorgeous Swiss mountain pass. The pass also features the Rhone Glacier, once a famous attraction, but now disappearing year by year, probably because of global warming. The video also features the once famous Hotel Belvedere, once a major hotspot and celebrity destination and now closed because of the Rhone glacier's retreat and loss of appeal. View cinematic footage of the Historisches Alpinhotel Grimsel Hospiz and the dams around it, such as the Grimsel Dam. he first certified guesthouse of Switzerland was located at this exact place, way back in 1142. In 1932, the Grimsel Hospiz caused quite a sensation as it was the first electrically heated house in Europe. Environmental considerations had to be taken into account when the hotel was completely renovated between 2008 and 2010 and the entire hotel is now heated by using hydroelectric waste-heat. As a historic 4-star alpine hotel in the heart of the KWO catchment area, the Hotel Hospiz reigns majestically above the Grimsel reservoir lake (Grimselsee). The Furka pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.431 m (7,976ft) above the sea level, located in one of the snowiest regions in Switzerland. It’s one of the world's most iconic, exhilarating and exciting drives, through the Swiss Alps. The pass was immortalized by the Aston DB5 / Ford Mustang car chase in James Bond's Goldfinger. It's one of the highest mountain roads of the Alps. The pass links the Ursern valley in the canton of Uri with the municipality of Goms in the canton of Valais. It’s one of the highest paved roads in the country, and the road over the pass was built in 1867. As you drive along the pass's road, you may see the train that travels the Furka Pass chugging along through the mountainside, creating a picturesque scene for you to hold in your memory. Countless tourists are attracted by the unique mountain panorama, the Rhone Glacier with its ice grotto, the attractive options for hiking, climbing and skiing tours, as well as the reopened steam railway. The drive is definitely worth it. The second part of the climb includes much more straight forward road, but it's also less steep. Don’t forget your camera! The road encompasses miles of stunning views through twisty hair pin corners, high elevations and steep grades. The Furka Pass also takes you within a few hundred meters of the Rhone Glacier, source of the Rhone river. Here you can park up and walk up to and actually inside the glacier itself. Travelers can actually walk through the glacier by booking a tour. Though the tunnel through the glacier is only 100 meters in length, you will want to make sure you dress warmly, because it doesn't take long for your body temperature to reach dangerous levels. Although the glacier has retreated dramatically in recent years, it still really is an incredible site, around 7km in length. In 1964, the hairpin bends on the Furka pass earned their place in cinema history thanks to the James Bond film 'Goldfinger' in the scene in which Tilly Masterson attempts to snipe Goldfinger. It was filmed in front of the Rhone Glacier. If you want the full James Bond experience, you can even visit at the iconic petrol station in Andermatt where Bond and Tilly Masterson part ways following her failed attempt to assassinate Goldfinger – it’s now part of the Aurora Hotel. But you’ll probably look anything but Bond-style glamorous when tackling it: steep slopes, hairpin bends, switchbacks and sharp, blind curves make this a white-knuckle ride to all but the most experienced (or crazy) drivers. At least the road’s wide and perfectly surfaced – this is Switzerland, after all. When the summer season lasts only three months (if you’re lucky) then you know you’re in an extreme place. Shrouded in mist and snow drifts for much of the year the Swiss Alps are a place of history, wonder and beauty in equal measure. Their size and expanse is often incomprehensible, instilling the feeling of vulnerability and insignificance to all who dare pass. Persevere and you’re rewarded with an experience that is simply beyond words and imagination. The engineering behind some of these great roads is nothing short of mind blowing, perfectly crafted hairpins and consistently challenging gradients are all part of their charm and character. The Swiss are renowned for their precision and having spent some time living in the country I can tell you that this stereotype goes well beyond watches and train timetables making it a truly unique place to explore. Starting in the village of Andermatt, nestled in the Ursern Valley, we’re faced with a big day ahead. Three monster climbs above 2,000 metres and over 3,000 metres elevation gain across the 105 km ride is not something to be taken lightly. The first tip is to make sure that you’re well prepared for all conditions, no matter what time of year it is. The weather can change in a moment and the descents can be long and cold. The fourth highest pass in Switzerland after the Umbrail (2,501m), Nufenen (2,477m) and Grand St Bernard (2,469m), the Furka Pass is a popular climb, often ridden alongside its neighbouring Grimsel and Susten passes. Such is the selection of huge peaks in this region you’re often spoilt for choice. It’s always tricky to bypass the Grimsel, its curves seen slicing their way heavenly from the summit of the Furka. Although today it’s the second climb that I feared the most, a climb that I’ve ridden a couple of times before and one that always had me on the ropes. On paper the Nufenen may appear to be a relatively straight forward grind, 13 kilometres in length with an average of 8.5%, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Suddenly after 3.5 kilometres as the wind starts to howl and the gradient ramps up another notch, you realise exactly why the best Swiss rider of his generation Fabian Cancellara once described this as the hardest big climb in the country. A further four kilometres of battling in slow motion against the raw elements of nature and you hit a series of nine hairpins. Physical turns into a mental battle and it’s you against the mountain all the way to the summit. While the surrounding 4,000m high peaks leave you in awe, the most prominent of which is the 4,274m high Finsteraarhorn, it’s important to pace yourself well as the day is far from over. The early slopes of the St Gotthard may appear to be nothing more than a maze of roads and bridges, it’s just beyond the town of Airolo, as you follow the signs for Tremola road, where this climb comes into its own. Legend has it that it first became accessible for pack mules by Emperor Charles the Great as early as the 760s. However, it would take more than a thousand years until what looks like a million or more cobblestones were laid and the Tremola road was born in 1832. It’s always amazing to take just a moment to wonder at all the people that have been on such a road over the centuries, who was the very first to scale the St Gotthard and the history that goes much further than the simple pleasure of riding a bike up and over such a marvel. If you've ridden this loop or any of the climbs featured, let us know how you got on in the comments below. We'd love to hear about your own experience! In this video you can enjoy the cab ride, the train drivers view from the historical steam train on the famous heritage Furka mountain railway (Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke) in the hart of the Swiss Alps as your ancestors did, 100 years ago. This journey starts in a small mountain village Realp, which is located in Uri canton and goes all the way up to the Furka DFB station on the altitude 2163 m and back down to the village Oberwald, in the alpine region Goms, in the canton of Valais. This trip was made on 13 August 2022 during a "Dampfbahn - Fest" which marked the jubilee - 30 years since the first section of the Furka mountain steam railway, the 3.6-kilometre-long Realp - Tiefenbach section, went into operation and almost 10 years after the last scheduled train of the Furka Oberalp Railway (FO) had travelled the route for the last time on 1982. You can enjoy this video in the resolution 4K/60 frames per second. I would like to thank to the members of the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke AG for supporting me and helping me to film this very important journey on the nearly 18 kilometre-long Furka Railway which is the longest operated unelectrified line in Switzerland. It is also the second highest rail crossing in Europe, after the Bernina Railway. The Uri side of the line also constitutes the highest railway in Central Switzerland.
